Weekly Newsletter – November 14

Good Morning! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. We are almost to Thanksgiving! The countdown is on 🙂 Here are some things to know for this week.

What We Are Learning:

English: This week we are learning the difference between common and proper nouns.

Bible: We are continuing the life of Jacob this week. We are learning about how he went back to Canaan to see his brother again and how God used that. We will be having a short quiz on Friday over the life of Jacob. We will review in class.

Reading: This week we are focusing on the main idea of the story. We are also learning about synonyms!

Math: We are continuing to work our way through multiplication. Everyone passed their ones on Friday and earned their first sundae piece. Tomorrow we are taking our Twos test and we will have Threes on Friday.

Social Studies: This week we are starting our unit over Captain John Smith and the settling of Jamestown. We will also be learning about the Pilgrims!

Spelling: We do have a spelling test on Friday this week!

Bible Verse and Spelling Words:

This Week’s Verse: Luke 2:10 – But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.”

Next Week’s Verse: Luke 2:11, 12 – Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” DUE ON TUESDAY!

Spelling Words: finish, pilot, even, wagon, music, silent, rapid, female, lemon, pupil, focus, robot, tulip, camel, salad, resident, spinach, climate, tradition, innocent. Bonus: pilgrims

Odds and Ends:

No School: We do not have school next Wednesday-Friday due to Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving Party: Our class party is next Tuesday at 2:30. All parents are welcome to join us!

Operation Christmas Child: In chapel a few weeks ago we watched a video from Samaritan’s Purse about Operation Christmas Child. Many of you have done this in the past, but for those of you who haven’t, this is an organization that seeks to provide millions of Christmas gifts for children all over the world. It is something we participate in as a school! Boxes are due this FRIDAY and we would love it if each student could put together a box! For more information visit https://www.samaritanspurse.org/what-we-do/operation-christmas-child/

Midterms: These will be going home next week! Please be patient with me as I update grades. Thanks!

Spirit Days: Next Monday the third grade class will be having an Ohio State Spirit Day! Come wearing your best scarlet and gray (or maize and blue if you dare). Next Tuesday our school will be having an WCS Spirit Day! Come wearing your best Wooster Christian wear. If you don’t have anything you can swing by the Spirit shop or wear red, white, and blue!

Multiplication Study Tips: I know that studying multiplication is hard. It was something I struggled with in elementary school as well. There are many different things you can do to help your student. Flashcards are always a good idea and you can make it fun by playing a game of war! There are plenty of worksheets online that are available as well. Another thing would be IXL math. Each student knows their username and password and they can pick the specific number they are studying to work on. We do this in computer as well but it is a great tool! Please remember, none of this takes the place of XtraMath during the week. I will do a blog post later this week of more ideas 🙂

Spelling Bee: Congrats to Joshua Stoner for getting fourth at the spelling bee this past weekend and Austin Hostetler for getting third! We are so proud of them!

I think that is it for this week! Have a great Monday!

-Mrs. Starkey
