Weekly Newsletter – October 31

Good Morning! Can you believe it is almost November? This fall is flying by. I have to be honest and say that I’m ready for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Two of my most favorite times of the year! I’ll be patient though 🙂 Here are a few things to know for this week.

What We Are Learning:

English: Last week we wrote the rough draft of our “When I Grow Up…” paragraph. This week we will be writing the final copy. Students have been doing such a great job with these!

Bible: This week we are learning about Isaac’s two sons Jacob and Esau. We will be talking about how Esau and Jacob with different and how God used them in different ways.

Reading: We are continuing to read Ramona Quimby. This week we will be reading chapters 8 and 9 and comparing ourselves with Ramona.

Science: We just barely started our unit over matter last week so we will be playing a little bit of catch up this week. We are going to be learning how to measure matter and how matter changes.

Math: We are wrapping up subtraction today and we did some review in class. The review sheet corrections will be coming home tonight as homework. We will be taking a test tomorrow. We will spend the rest of the week just doing some review activities and then next week we will be starting multiplication! A letter will be going home later this week with more details.

Spelling: Our test this week is on Friday. Our words this week are focusing on the “le” ending.

Bible Verse and Spelling Words:

This Week’s Verse: Luke 2:6-7 – While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.

Next Week’s Verse: Luke 2:8,9 – And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.

Spelling Words: title, riddle, jungle, buckle, people, temple, rumble, trouble, capable, able, settle, handle, double, shuttle, whistle, sample, sparkle, vegetable, planet, history. Bonus: November

Odds and Ends:

Operation Christmas Child:  In chapel two weeks ago we watched a video from Samaritan’s Purse about Operation Christmas Child. Many of you have done this in the past, but for those of you who haven’t, this is an organization that seeks to provide millions of Christmas gifts for children all over the world. It is something we participate in as a school! Information went home last week about how to pack boxes and what to buy. Boxes will be due the Friday before Thanksgiving and we would love it if each student could put together a box! For more information visit https://www.samaritanspurse.org/what-we-do/operation-christmas-child/

Report Cards Envelopes: If you happen to still have your report card envelope please send that back in ASAP. Thanks!

Box Tops: Box Tops are due on Wednesday so we can turn them in on Friday:

Thank You: I just wanted to say thank you for the Panera gift card last week for conferences! I feel so blessed by each of you and so thankful to have your child in class. It was a nice date night out! Thank you! Also, thank you for taking time out of your week to meet with me last week. I know that things are busy, but I appreciate the time.

I think that is it for this week! Let me know if you have any questions.

In Christ,

Mrs. Starkey

Weekly Newsletter – October 24

Good Morning! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! Our weekend was very busy, but it was excellent. We saw 243 people ask Jesus into their lives this weekend at church! I’m a little excited about it 🙂 Here are a few things to know for this week.

Reading: We are continuing to work our way through Ramona. We are working on chapter 6 this week and we will be having a small quiz on Wednesday over the chapters so far. We will review in class for this quiz.

Homework Logs: Please make sure that homework logs are getting initialed each time your student does their math and reading. As a reminder, math needs to be done for 10 minutes 5 days a week and reading needs to be done for 15 minutes 5 days a week. This can really effect a child’s grade when it is not done.

Operation Christmas Child: In chapel on Friday, we watched a video from Samaritan’s Purse about Operation Christmas Child. Many of you have done this in the past, but for those of you who haven’t, this is an organization that seeks to provide millions of Christmas gifts for children all over the world. It is something we participate in as a school! More information will be going home this week, but I just wanted to go ahead and plant the bug in your ear. Boxes will be due the Friday before Thanksgiving and we would love it if each student could put together a box! Weekly Newsletter – October 17

Good Morning! We are in the final week of the first grading period. Crazy to think about! I hope you all had a wonderful (slightly longer) weekend and that you got to enjoy the beautiful weather. Here are a few things to know for this week.

What We Are Learning:

English: This week we are working on writing a good paragraph. We are using the idea of “Hamburger Writing” to help us to do that. Basically, a good hamburger has more than the meat and bun. It has toppings. In the same way our paragraphs should have more than just a beginning, middle, and end. They should have details!

Math: We are working on regrouping in subtraction this week.

Reading: We are continuing to work our way through Ramona Quimby this week. We are going to be reading chapters 3 and 4.

Bible: We are continuing to learn about Abraham and Isaac this week. Also, I dropped the ball and forgot about the Bible Quiz last weekend. Between Grandparents Day, the intruder drill, and fire safety I started losing my mind. Instead of trying to catch up and take one today when some may not have studied, we are going to take one of Friday with all of the books from the Old Testament. So we are adding Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi. Thanks for understanding!

Social Studies: This week we are wrapping up maps. We are going to be making a map of Ohio to finish out our unit.

Spelling: We do have a test this week! We are learning about words with the “r” sound.

Bible Verse and Spelling Words:

This Week’s Verse: Luke 2:4 – So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David.

Next Week’s Verse: Luke 2:5 – He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child.

Spelling Words: airport, skirts, chair, early, answer, upstairs, heard, fearful, thirteen, shepherd, nearly, together, stir, silver, first, learn, stairs, covered, engine, symbol. Bonus: fascinating

Odds and Ends:

End of the Grading Period: The last day of the grading period is Friday. Reports cards will be handed out at conferences.

Parent Teacher Conferences: Time slots went home in today’s folder. See you all next week!

No School: There is no school Friday, October 28 due to a teacher in-service day.

I think that is it! Have a great week!

Weekly Newsletter – October 10

Reading: This week we are starting “Ramona Quimby, Age 8.” We are reading this as a class and we have a packet and some activities we will be working on for the next few weeks. This is such a fun book and I am excited for this unit!

Spelling Words: bigger, biggest, glided, gliding, grabbed, grabbing, happier, happiest, hoped, hoping, hopped, hopping, larger, largest, stopped, stopping, tinier, tiniest, great, underneath. Bonus: grandparent

Odds and Ends:

Grandparents Day: This is on Friday! We love our grandparents and we are so excited to celebrate them! Please remember that in order for your student to go home with their grandparent a permission slip needs to be turned into the office. If you haven’t done that yet, please do so by tomorrow! Also, school is done at 11:30 that day and there is NO Kids Time. Please contact the office if you have any questions.

Fire Safety: Today we had a fire safety with one of the Wooster Firemen. We talked about how to safely get out of a building not only at school but at home too, and students were encouraged to talk with their parents about their safety plan.

End of the Grading Period: The first grading period ends next Friday (October 21). Report cards will be available at conferences.

Conferences: Time slot for conferences will be going home either later this week or early next week.

No School: There is no school Friday, October 28 due to a teacher in service day.
